Replatforming without rebuilding

How Evangel University rebranded and replatformed, but didn’t have to rebuild their site from scratch

Making the plan

When the rebrand was announced, we began discussions around their website’s page builder. When we onboarded with Evangel, we absorbed an existing WordPress site that used WP Bakery as the page builder. Given that the WP Block Editor is native to WordPress, we knew we wanted to transition them away from WP Bakery.

Given the rebrand was happening, this was a good time to take stock of everything and make a gameplan that balanced:

  • Not rebuilding the site from scratch (there are 1,000s of pages)
  • Leveraged the WP Block Editor
  • Create a Codex of building blocks and rank them by frequency of use

“Chris and his team are extremely communicative and responsive, offering step-by-step instructions and creative solutions for our web projects.”

Executing the plan

The color palette was transitioning from a handful of flat colors to gradients (which, of course, were different colors). We went through each color in the original palette and determined which gradient it would be swapped to.

When we built out the entire Codex, we determined the list of blocks that were used most often across their key pages. We did a light-weight design refresh on each block to ensure there was minimal custom code for this initial launch.

There wasn’t the time to go through the 1,000+ pages to ensure 100% adherence to the brand. We focused on templates and pages in the primary journey that a potential student goes through.

How the banner section transitioned

  • Too much empty space (no CTAs)
  • This banner section took up the entire screen (a user was required to scroll to see any content)
  • The title gets lost in the background and colored slant
  • All the navigation is hiding in a hamburger menu on desktop
  • Closed the vertical gap (although this banner is tall, you can still see other content on desktop)
  • Added CTAs
  • The title of the page is legible (no matter what image is selected
  • Added navigation to allow students to get more places within a single click
