Our agenda
This isn’t your standard “tell me about your career” podcast. We’re going to take a single challenge you’ve gone through and walk through it, start to finish.
You’ll need to think through three key areas ahead of time.
Challenge
What was one leadership challenge that really shaped you?
Why did it matter? What made it hard?
What was at stake?
How did it feel in the moment? What pressure were you under?
Options
What options were on the table?
How did you evaluate what to do next?
Did you choose wrong first? How did you pivot?
Outcome
What happened in the end?
Was there a moment when you realized it had worked (or hadn’t)?
What did you learn from it?
How has this challenge shaped the way you lead today?
Good things to know
I use Riverside, and I have it setup to automatically record. Don’t worry: the podcast is completely edited, and we’ll shoot the breeze for a while.
We will assuredly chase some rabbits. That’s OK. We’re also talking about a challenging time — there’s a chance you may accidentally say something you don’t want “on the record.” No sweat at all. The great thing about an edited podcast is that you don’t have to be perfect. The goal is to tell a story. We’ll make it sound fantastic.
I’ve been on several podcasts where the host simply uses the entire cut of the recording for the podcast. Those have made me feel like I have to be “on” during the entire recording. For this podcast: You don’t have to. In fact, we’ll have small talk at the beginning, and there is a good chance that I’ll just start slipping in questions about the topic you told me about. I have had one guest tell me: “Oh, I didn’t even know we started. That was awesome!”
I’ve had a number of people ask me this. Some questions that have been good to ponder are below:
– What is something from your childhood that you’ve held onto as “fact” that you needed to disassemble?
– Did you travel somewhere, learn about culture, and it actually changed the way you lead?
– Was there a seemingly small, inconsequential moment that you keep coming back to as a cornerstone?
– Do you have a passion or a hobby that has changed the way you view what you do?
– You stepped out and tried something different in the face of a lot of people telling you “that’s a bad idea.”
I block off an hour for recording, as I want our conversation to be as natural as possible. In fact, sometimes, we’ll chase a rabbit and find an even better story.
The podcast will get trimmed down substantially. Most episodes so far average about 10 minutes, with the longer ones being closer to 15.
I always love someone who is excited to promote their episode. You’ll get access to a Google Drive folder that has the raw video files (ya know: if you say something that you would personally like to clip for your own, do it!), the episode artwork, and a couple of social media clips.
